Paris 2007 is the second release this year of Dylan’s April 23 show in the French capital, following Paris Modern Times (Tambourine Man Records TMR-126/127). The tape Crystal Cat use for their release is superior to TMR’s version. It is an excellent and well-balanced audience recording remarkable for its clarity, detail and power. The newspaper Le Monde pointed out how Dylan, who usually play in the Zenith when he comes to Paris, played instead in the bigger Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, the French equivalent to Madison Square Garden.
The same newspaper generally praised the show for the new tunes from Modern Times. The forced twenty minute intermission after “Rollin’ And Tumblin’,” required by Parisian law, is almost completely edited out and wouldn’t be noticeable except if you knew read about the event and Paris Modern Times gives a more accurate record of the events in the venue on that night. A more detailed discussion of the show itself can be found in my comments for the TMR release.
Like all Dylan releases, Crystal Cat offers a generous amount of bonus material to fill the second disc to the limit. They place five songs from the previous year’s tours beginning with the rare “God Knows” from Arizona. This song from Under The Red Sky was performed seventeen times in 2005, but only once in 2006 and has yet to make an appearance in 2007. the entire show was released last year on God Knows Everything (TMR-109/110) using a brilliant sounding audience recording. Crystal Cat use a different, but equally as brilliant sounding tape for this release.
The following two songs, “Cold Irons Bound” and “I Shall Be Released” come from the Pittsfield, Massachusetts show. The latter of the two was performed only in Pittsfield and on July 15th in Indianapolis. “Lay, Lady, Lay” comes from the summer tour of minor league baseball stadiums and Cooperstown is of course the home of the Baseball Hall Of Fame and Doubleday Field, named after Abner Doubleday, is where the annual Hall Of Fame game is played. The final song on this release is “Forever Young” from the following night in University Park, Pennsylvania. This is one of only eight performances of the song on this tour.
