Agree with Pedro - those LA shows if released in soundboard would be quite popular - I'm also waiting for this potential release. There are many 75' dates that would be an improvement if released in SB - Rampaging Cajun is a prime example. We can only hope!

GSPARACO: You mentioned in one of your comments above about a " cache of tapes" that EV is buying from their Showco contact. I am guessins all of them are 75 sbd tapes. DO YOU KNOW WHICH SHOWS ARE IN THE" CACHE "??? If not can you take a wild guess. I've been thinking about buying DEEP THROAT ( which is pretty expensive) but then I would look like a complete idiot if the 3 nights are later released as as sbds. Let me ( or us) know.
Thanks!!!

Wow Cliff!! What a very descriptive and excellent review. I praise EV for unearthing these recordings. I'm grateful for fans and Godfather for correcting their mistakes.

Thanks Pedro. Since I'm the main reviewer for the website, I have more reviews to write than the others and can't always produce articles that are as long and indepth as I would like. However I think I cover all the relevant bases in them and attempt to answer the questions that any collector might have.

gsparaco- I did re-read your review of R CAJUN a couple of times and it is a very good review. I will most probably get the title. However I enjoyed your massive review of DEEP THROAT even more. Funny how sometimes reading reviews and getting info is as much fun as getting the cds themselves!

GSPARACO and Cliff - many thanks for your comments and insight in reply to my question. I admit that I have personally purchased both Godfather and Eelgrass products that were already released by EV for both price reasons (Eelgrass) and quality in the case of a few Godfather releases. At the very least what EV does seems to create some anticipation and to a degree some excitement every time they release one of their "previously unreleased" SB offerings. For the above comment I agree I would love to see what Cliff has to say about Rampaging Cajun - to me it was a total hit - not saying someone cannot make it better but it is very good (Speaking of the B type).

Tjs, you seem to indicate that I am criticizing EV unfairly. However, in the early part of ny review I mentioned both the praise given to certain EV releases and some recent criticisms. I stated that some EV releases have been criticized (both on CMR and elsewhere) for both presentation of the music and other factors such as packaging; this is a simple fact - those criticisms have been made. I did not mention Rampaging Cajun because it was released after Long Beach Californication and therefore not relevant to the review.

Overall, I think that EV should be applauded for releasing numerous soundboards which we would not otherwise have. It seems to be common knowledge that EV have paid considerable sums to acquire these and I have no problem with EV's desire to make a profit from its investment. EV knows that other labels (principally Eelgrass) will copy its releases. Releasing beautifully produced, very limited (and therefore expensive) editions therefore constitutes a sensible marketing strategy, maximizing profit before other labels get their editions out. This caters to collectors, including myself, who want to acquire releases which (to quote the title of a David Bowie bootleg DVD) are "rare, precious and beautiful."

I also have no problem with other labels copying EV and producing cheaper editions. This caters to the collectors unwilling or, more importantly, unable to afford the prices charged by premium labels such as EV and Tarantura. It is important to those collectors that labels such as Eelgrass provide cheaper editions that they can afford. It was therefore relevant to mention this in my review.

The problem arises, as gsparaco points out above, when not enough care is taken with the production of expensive, exclusive editions. One expects a premium product for a premium price, and, as many commentators have contended, we do not get this from EV on this occasion (although, to reiterate what I stated in my review, on other occasions we have).

Ultimately, my preference for the Godfather version has nothing to do with packaging or cost (although it is a nice bonus for the better version to also be cheaper) and everything to do with the fact that it sounds better. My review surely makes this clear.

I'm not sure exactly what you're arguing tjs. Are you saying we should praise EV above and beyond Godfather and Eelgrass?

The reason why EV is the first to release these soundboards is because they have the Showco contact who has the cache of tapes and are paying a handsome fee for them. These soundboards are the only thing keeping Empress Valley somewhat relevant these days.

The problem is not necessarily with the price. Most Zep collectors would be willing to part with $150 for an exclusive soundboard recording. The problem is the price coupled with the flimsy, unimaginative packaging and the poor remastering of the tapes. For example, the Long Beach soundboard on this release ran too fast on Empress Valley, which is an unbelieveable oversight by what is a Led Zeppelin dedicated label. EV seems to not really produce titles with the collector in mind anymore, but only to recoup their losses to their Showco contact.

This Godfather release puts in the effort that EV lacks: the tape sounds better and runs at the correct speed. This is the definitive version of the Long Beach soundboard, making the EV irrelevant.

Not defending EV's pricing policy but why are they always the first to release these new SB titles and then labels such as Godfather and Eelgrass come out a while after? No mention above of Rampaging Cajun (very good) which was equally pricy by EV but someone has to take some risk? Let's see someone else be the first to release some of these SB shows and get the acclaim or the criticism from collectors.

I have both the EV release and Godfather and the Godfather is crisper, but let's not talk about how many releases I have of just this one show. It's time to start focusing on other years like from 69 - 73

This is a very good, and affordable release from Godfather Records. Particularly impressive is the way in which they've reduced and/or eliminated many of the digital noise problems that plagued the EVSD issue, with no apparent loss of sonic quality. Nice job and highly recommended!
