Carry Me Back To Old Virginia (Live Soundboard Collection LSC-016)

(43:05) See See Rider, Proud Mary, Never Been To Spain, You Gave Me A Mountain, Until It’s Time For You To Go, Polk Salad Annie, Love Me, All Shook Up, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Love Me Tender, It’s Over, introductions, For The Good Times, American Trilogy, Funny How Time Slips Away, Can’t Help Falling In Love With You, closing vamp

The King toured three times in 1972 outside of Las Vegas.  The first was fourteen shows in April beginning on April 5th in Buffalo, New York and ending on April 18th in San Antonio, Texas.  He played four shows in Virginia over three days with Richmond laying between two in Hampton Roads and the the final in Roanoke.  Carry Me Back To Old Virgina on Live Soundboard Collection presents the forty-three minute soundboard fragment that has been in circulation and was previously pressed on Carry Me Back To Old Virginia (Vicky CD 0217) in 1995.

This release is missing the opening “Also Spracht Zarathustra” is missing along with the beginning of “See See Rider,” “Teddy Bear – Don’t Be Cruel,” “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Hound Dog” after “All Shook Up,” “Suspicious Minds” after “It’s Over,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You” after “For The Good Times,” and the “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” reference after “American Trilogy.”  The complete soundboard recently surfaced and was released on Red Hot In Richmond (Madison CWP 023) rendering this release obsolete.  But as it is, the sound quality of the recording is very clear and enjoyable with the vocals up front and the audience cheering pushed into the background.

Dressed in the red jumpsuit, The King played to a full house that night in Richmond.  The tape cuts in during the first song of the set “See See Rider” and the opening songs are recent covers including CCR’s “Proud Mary” and Three Dog Night’s “Never Been To Spain.”  During “Until It’s Time For You To Go” Elvis kisses the women in the audience.  The audience cheer loudly and Elvis skips a few lines in the song but it is one of several magical moments in the set.  Before “Love Me” Elvis says, “I’d like to do a few oldies but goodies for you.  If you’ll wait about thirty minutes.”  He is distracted by something and says, “That’s a funny looking thing up there. I hope that thing don’t fall.  It’s flatter than a pancake…”    Carry Me Back To Old Virginawas released along with several other shows in the spring of 2008, all packaged in digipacks and with great sound quality.  However since the compete recording is available this can be passed over.
