Genesis – Voices In The Academy (Highland HL189/190)

Voices In The Academy (Highland HL189/190)

Academy of Music, New York, NY – May 4th, 1974

Disc 1 (51:05):  Watcher Of The Skies, band introducing, Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, The Cinema Show, I Know What I Like, Firth Of Fifth

Disc 2 (41:38):  The Session, The Musical Box, Supper’s Ready

The Selling England By The Pound tour, where Genesis received some degree of international recognition  and praise, came to a close with three shows in New York.  Scheduled for May 4th, 5th, and 6th, 1974 at the Academy Of Music, the middle show had to be canceled because their equipment was stolen and rescheduled the next day.  But the only complete tape to come out of these engagement is the opening night on May 4th.

Highland released Voices In The Academy early in their production run and is a good choice for silver release.  It is a very good sounding audience tape of an intense concert before a vocal New York crowd.  They probably used the best available tape at the time, but it is  a high generation copy and is missing “Horizons” and “The Battle Of Epping Forest” after “The Musical Box.”

Since it’s release the master tape has surfaced in stupendous sound quality and with the missing two songs.  A silver release of this show, and with the May 6th show too, would make a sparkling Genesis release and would be a classic Selling England By The Pound tour title.  The packaging is very nice with several photos from the tour but, as it is, Voices In The Academy is not recommended.
