  1. Re Judas Priest ‘Definitive Blitz 1981’ (Zodiac 266). Ignore my previous comment – it is the 1979 NYC Palladium radio broadcast that needs a silver release. Put that mistake down to my excitement. However, this new, delightful release *is* worthy of that excitement. It is a definite SQ upgrade on previous 1981 NYC Palladium releases, such as the ‘Devils’s Spine’ (2CD, Buccaneer Records BUC 030/2), ‘The Priest Is Back’ (2CD, Rocks 92047/92048), and ‘Still Worth Fighting For’ (CD, Hot Rockin’ Recordings 016). There are other releases, I believe, but I never had those.

Compared to the previous releases, this new release seems 3 songs light on the Palladium show. However, it turns out that the original radio broadcast – and not the bootleggers – added 3 songs from ‘Unleashed In The East’ to the material taped at the Palladium. ‘Genocide’, ‘Exciter’, and ‘The Ripper’ were slotted in between ‘Hot Rockin” and ‘You Don’t Have to Be Old To Wise’, for reasons unclear. (The aforementioned single CD ‘Still Worth Fighting For’ dropped 2 of the broadcast tracks due to timing restrictions, the irony being that it unknowingly retained those 3 tracks which did not belong.) I have read that this new Zodiac release uses an ‘unused broadcast master’, ie the songs selected from the Palladium show before the 3 ‘UITE’ tracks were added, rather than using a previous release and cutting those 3. The SQ certainly suggests a different source.

CD2 of ‘Definitive Blitz’ is also an upgrade, this time to the Hammersmith 1981 broadcast.

Simply put, this could make an official release – it’s that good.

  3. Finally! A silver release for Priest’s 1981 Palladium show, broadcast on radio. If they’ve improved on the source it would be even better.
