This ‘no label’ reissue of the Layla album looks very promising. I have their reel to reel tape reissue of Clapton’s debut solo album and the sound quality is phenomenal – it combines the warmth of analog with a startling clarity that the standard cd version lacks. The classic 1970 Layla record was never a particularly great technical capture – the sound is a bit thin and flat – so it will be interesting to hear if the original reel to reel tape opens up similar new sonic dimensions.
Just a follow-up to my comment above. This reissue is not the same revelation for the ears as the ‘no label’ reel to reel version of the 1970 Clapton debut album, but it is still very worthwhile. The slightly flat sound of the recording is not alleviated, but the thinness is! What emerges on this reel to reel master is a deeper, fuller soundstage – which only enhances the power of these already amazing performances! My preferred version of this album.
